Royal Orchestral Society Awards

Founded in 1885 by HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, there is a Scholarship, a single prize of £400 given annually, and an Exhibition, a single prize of £250.

All students who play by invitation with the Royal Orchestral Society at a concert are paid at the rates mentioned below, even if they do not qualify as candidates for an award.
In order to qualify to be chosen for an award candidates must be students and must, with the permission of their professors, play with the Royal Orchestral Society in one or more of the Society's 3 main annual concerts. They must play at the rehearsal on the day of the Concert and at a minimum of 3 prior rehearsals on dates chosen by the candidate from the 8 to 10 available each term to chose from. The rates of pay are £30.00 for each rehearsal before the day of the Concert and a Concert fee of £65 for the rehearsal and performance on the day of the concert.

The Society welcomes candidates, and encourages them to play for more than the minimum number of obligatory rehearsals.

It is the task of the Committee and Conductors of the Royal Orchestral Society to choose the winner of the Scholarship and the Exhibition from the qualifying entrants. The choice will probably be made in the Summer of 2008 from those who have played in one or more of the Summer and Autumn Concerts of 2007 and the Spring concert of 2008.

Further details are to be found on the information sheets available on the table at rehearsals.
